Policy for Brachycephalic (Snub-Nosed) Breeds
Animal comfort & safety first
Snub-nosed animals have compressed respiratory tracts, making them vulnerable to heat exhaustion and breathing difficulty in warm weather or unventilated spaces. Both Australian airlines (Qantas, Virgin) and our personal road runs adhere to strict welfare rules to protect your pet.
Affected Breeds
Breeds classified as brachycephalic by airlines include, but are not limited to:
- • French Bulldogs
- • British & Aussie Bulldogs
- • Pugs & Boston Terriers
- • Boxers & Mastiffs
- • Shih Tzus & Lhasa Apsos
- • Cavalier King Charles
- • Pekingese
- • Persian cats
- • Exotic Shorthairs
- • British Shorthair cats
Air Travel Requirements
- Crate sizing: Must be 10% larger than standard crate dimensions for increased airflow.
- Ventilation: Four-sided ventilation crate is mandatory for air freight.
- Vet Fit-to-Fly certificate: Required within 7–14 days of travel date verifying breathing fitness.
- Temperature caps: Flights may be embargoed or rescheduled if tarmac temperatures exceed airline limits.
Personal Road Transport Alternative
When airlines place seasonal heat embargoes on brachycephalic pets, or when you prefer door-to-door supervision, Carmel and Nick offer climate-controlled road transport with personal stops, regular water, and photo updates. We measure animals and crates at pick-up to guarantee proper comfort throughout the entire journey.
